GeniusEnergyLab provides Renewable Energy System consultancy and detailed design services for large scale building energy systems. We leverage the sweet spots of available technologies including Ground Source Heat Pumps, Combined Heat and Power Engines, Wind, Solar, Smart Controls and Energy Storage.

We work with all stakeholders in the channel from Large End User Developers through to specialist M&E contractors and consultants.

We play in multiple areas with propositions tailored to meet each individual customer’s requirements.

Our mission is to become the global leader in renewable energy advice for large and complex energy systems.


Recent projects include:


Social Housing Projects – In partnership with Kensa

Chris partners closely with Kensa Contracting in the social housing space. GeniusEnergyLab provides design services for Kensa Contracting’s innovative solution which reduces both carbon emissions and fuel poverty for tenants.


Prestigious International Headquarters – Geneva

Chris was recently engaged by a major M&E engineering practice to deliver specialist consultancy advice to reduce carbon emissions and run costs as well as improving comfort levels in a large and prestigious NGO building complex in Geneva. The project, which is to use Lake Geneva as a source for both heating and cooling, involved complex analysis and modelling of annual system performance to meet stringent efficiency targets.


Isle of Iona Community Renewable Energy Project

The remote and beautiful Isle of Iona off the West coast of Scotland is due to go almost completely ground source in 2018/19 thanks to design and techno economic analysis carried out by GeniusEnergyLab in conjunction with Scene Community and funding by the Scottish Government’s district heating loan fund. The community owned energy network will provide heating to homes and businesses across the island including the historic Abbey.

Chris was the first employee of the company and was involved in all areas of the business from initial consultation to system performance verification and monitoring. As the company grew to become UK market leader the Chief Technical Officer role covered Research & Development, Training, Product and Business Development, Lobbying and Business Systems.

Chris also carried out key-note presentations and is a globally renowned trainer and speaker on ground source heat pumps and hybrid renewable energy systems. In his time at GI Chris was directly and indirectly responsible for over 200MW of renewable energy system installations.

Notable projects include:

  • Gloucester Police HQ: 0.6MW heating & 0.8MW cooling, the UKs first large scale GSHP Installation.
  • University of Oxford Earth Sciences: 1.3MW heating & 0.7MW cooling, the first GSHP system to include active carbon management via an advanced bespoke control system.
  • One New Change – St Paul’s London: 2.4MW heating & 2.3MW cooling, the largest energy pile installation in the UK.
  • Mansfield Hospital: 5.0MW heating & 5.4MW cooling, the largest surface water system in Europe.
  • Robert Gordon University: 0.9MW Heating & 0.9MW cooling, the largest GSHP system currently operational in Scotland.
  • Orkney Schools: 1.5MW Heating only across 4 sites.

About Chris Davidson

Chris graduated in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College and co-founded Geothermal International in 2001 which grew to become the UK market leader in large scale Ground Source Heat Pump systems. As Chief Technical Officer, Chrisand his team took direct responsibility for all system designs from initial feasibility to system prove out and ongoing monitoring. Between 2001 and 2014 he was responsible for over 200MW of installed system capacity. As a pioneer of hybrid solutions with other renewable technologies such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), Chris remains a world leader in thinking with real world installed experience in this sector.
