Acre has been retained by Associated British Ports as they seek to find a new Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) for their Southampton port facility. Within this impactful role there is a huge emphasis on creating a Health & Safety cultural shift and taking the port on a journey of behaviour change.

The Southampton facility is described as 'Britain's Gateway to the World'. Handling 900,000 vehicles annually, Southampton is Britain's largest vehicle handling port. It also poses as Europe's leading turnaround cruise port, with around 2 million passengers entering on a yearly basis. Southampton is also home to the UK's second largest container terminal with more than 1.9 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) handled in 2018.

Being at the heart of the UK's manufacturing and automotive supply chains, the Southampton port handles exports valuing circa £40 Billion annually, including around £36 Billion destined for markets outside of the EU.

Key duties will include:

  • Leading and coaching the Health, Safety, Security & Environment team to achieve relevant goals and objectives

  • Working with regional leadership teams and group Safety and Compliance teams to develop and deliver a comprehensive strategy for Southampton which is consistent with group level Safety & Compliance strategies

  • Leading a team of 3 professionals from Environment, Safety & Security

  • Acting as a true business partner to the Regional Director and support in resolving complex problems and to establish/encourage appropriate behavioural and cultural levers to initiate a further step change in improvements to HSES

  • Leading environmental programmes to support Southampton City's green city charter

This role will suit somebody with a background in high risk operational industries, who is used to operating daily with senior business leaders. Confidence, emotional intelligence, determination and the ability to truly evidence moving a company forward in Health and Safety are key requirements to being successful within this recruitment process, and whilst in post.

You will be required to have:

  • An engaging and personable approach, with a proven track record of culture change and leadership

  • The mindset to think creatively and be curious to question conventional practices. This includes taking calculated risks, and embracing change

  • Experience in inspiring others and taking a team and a business/business unit on a period of change, whilst offering on-going support to ensure objectives are succeeded

  • Proven experience of influencing a variety of stakeholders in a complex organisation

  • A recognised HSES qualification, for example BSc/NEBOSH/NCRQ Diploma
