Summary of Principal Functions:

The principal function of the position is to be responsible for leading and executing company-wide sustainability initiatives. This includes development of corporate sustainability and ESG strategy, creation and tracking of sustainability goals, overseeing the production of public sustainability reports, responding to stakeholder sustainability inquiries, high-touch stakeholder engagement and collaborations around ESG issues, embedding sustainability practices throughout Cliffs' business lines, and serving as a sustainability thought leader to increase Cliffs' reputation. The position requires individual initiative to plan, perform, and achieve the desired objectives while anticipating the ESG issues of high risk or cost to the Corporation.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of sustainability strategy, policies, and initiatives to improve the Corporation's ESG impact. This includes but is not limited to GHG and energy reduction, water use, byproducts, recycling, procurement, human rights, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability governance. Serve as the sustainability and ESG subject matter expert to the Corporation.

  • Oversee the creation of an annual corporate sustainability report, aligned with global sustainability standards. This includes oversight responsibility over collecting, analyzing, and monitoring all sustainability data and narrative development.

  • Oversee the submission of investor and customer sustainability questionnaires, including CDP submissions. Ensure excellence in all sustainability ratings and benchmark progress against competitors in the sector. Work to continuously improve sustainability scores and reputation.

  • Develop sustainability presentations and proposals for stakeholders as needed, including customer, investor, community, and internal stakeholder engagements.

  • Collaborate directly with leadership from environment, sales, procurement, investor relations, communications, legal, human resources, and finance to further embed sustainability strategy within the Corporation to align with business goals.

  • Identify, develop, and manage relationships with third party nonprofit organizations and industry groups to further the Corporation's sustainability agenda and reputation.

  • Collaborate with communications to develop sustainability-focused content for website, social media, and press releases.

Competencies Required:

  • Must have proven success and experience in launching and managing corporate environmental sustainability initiatives with measurable outcomes.

  • Ability to manage and direct project teams of internal and external resources.

  • Working knowledge of sustainability reporting guidelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and work effectively in new, undeveloped areas.

  • Expert written communication skills.

  • Expert presentation and facilitation skills with the ability to lead discussions on sustainability topics for a diverse range of stakeholders.
