The Port of London Authority is responsible for managing 95 miles of the River Thames, from Teddington to the North Sea, working to keep commercial and leisure users safe, protecting and enhancing the environment and promoting the use of the river for trade and travel. The PLA is a self-financing 'profit for purpose' Trust Port, reinvesting its surpluses to support delivery of the recently launched Thames Vision 2050.

Working from the head office in Gravesend, the executive team is looking for someone like you to be the face of Sustainability for the Authority, leading the organisation's transition to Net Zero. Supported by an experienced team, you will lead, develop and deliver a long-term sustainability strategy for the tidal Thames. You will also report directly into the PLA Chief Executive.

You'll be:

  • A confident and experienced leader - you'll be responsible for developing and then implementing a pragmatic and resilient sustainability strategy, in line with Thames Vision 2050 and Thames Estuary 2100 climate goals

  • Passionate about making a difference - you'll be a leading voice for sustainable change in the UK ports and shipping industry

  • Organised and able to prioritise - your skills and experience will be in high demand, so it's imperative that you are able to work with both autonomy and efficiency, choosing carefully which projects to prioritise at a given time

  • A team player - you can work collaboratively with an executive team and possess strong leadership capabilities to create a high performing and inclusive team

  • Commercially astute - you'll be developing costed investment proposals and business cases, so you'll need to be able to clearly communicate the value add of sustainability

In terms of experience:

  • It's important that you have environmental advocacy and policy experience, working across public, private and third sectors

  • You'll have worked at a senior level in a large or complex organisation

  • You'll have a track record in translating strategy into practical action

  • It's vital that you have led and coached a team in a prior role.

  • If you can demonstrate that you can build meaningful relationships from front line operational staff to the board room, that will go a long way

The Port of London Authority is headquartered in Gravesend - there is scope for flexible working and spending time in the City of London office. In return for your skills and expertise, you will be met with a competitive salary, a discretionary bonus and a car allowance.
