The Church Commissioners for England are expanding their sector-leading Responsible Investment team and are seeking a Director to take ownership of their efforts on social issues.

The Commissioners are well known for their effective company engagement work and are continually looking for opportunities to further expand this agenda - including across key areas such as executive pay, diversity, and human rights.

This is a high-profile role in a growing and motivated team, with significant scope for demonstrating leadership both within the organisation and broader Responsible Investing space.

As a Director on the team, you will be tasked with assisting the running of the RI function and delivering against the Commissioners' RI policies, as well as leading the expansion of programmes on social issues including human rights, diversity, Big Tech, and AI.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead expansion of existing social programmes, with a mandate to be ambitious and collaborate extensively with peers to maximise impact

  • Lead engagement with companies on social issues, and engage with policymakers, as appropriate

  • Support ESG integration into investment decision-making across asset classes, including engagement with external managers

  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, liaising with the communications team to respond to queries on RI activities

  • Reporting to trustees and others, including the creation of Board materials and assisting with stewardship reporting obligations

  • Ensure implementation of and adherence to the Church Commissioners' Responsible Investment policies across the portfolio

  • Input into consultations and investor whitepapers as well as representing the Commissioners at public events and panels

  • Assisting with training and oversight of junior colleagues

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years' track record in ESG issues, with a dedicated focus on social issues gained within a commercial setting (investor or plc)

  • A degree in business, economics, social sciences or similar, or equivalent experience

  • Solid understanding of ESG issues in the investor landscape

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on strategic objectives with tangible outcomes

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills together with the ability to gather information and use it to draw sound conclusions

  • Experience communicating in public forums, both written and in-person

  • Proficient MS Office user, proficient in Excel and PowerPoint
