Are you looking to create impactful and meaningful change in an important industry? Are you willing to create an ESG strategy from scratch and help shape the future of the maritime sector?

Harwich Haven Authority is a major trade gateway, which has been fuelling the UK's economy since 1963. With five port facilities operating in the Haven area, they are responsible for over 40% of all seaborne freight entering the UK.

The newly created ESG Director role will enable Harwich Haven Authority to become a trailblazer and industry pioneer in the global fight against climate change. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the Board, you will be responsible for developing a sector leading ESG strategy which seeks to embed sustainability into all aspects of the organisation's operations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Spearheading the Authority's environmental agenda and creating a strategy in line with the Government's 2035 Transport Decarbonisation Plan and Maritime 2050 Strategy

  • Using your leadership skills and a combination of working groups and forums, raise awareness of environmental issues across the organisation and its stakeholder base

  • Working closely with the Corporate Affairs Manager to build an ESG brand that is recognised throughout the UK Government, the community and the UK maritime industry

  • Identifying initiatives and projects within the community that align with the Authority's purpose, vision and values

  • Leading the audit of the Authority's supply chains to assure compliance with ESG policy and guidance

  • Working with the CEO and CFO, take ownership of the ESG elements of the Corporate Risk Register

You will have:

  • Proven experience of developing ESG strategies and plans with complex interactions in a highly visible, transparent and scrutinised environment

  • Strong influencing skills - the capacity to balance the need for a rigorous, disciplined and programmatic approach with the ability to win hearts and minds and affect a cultural shift within the organisation

  • A robust understanding of GHG emissions management

  • Proven ability to effectively line manage individuals, providing clear instruction, appropriate challenge and supporting individual development

This opportunity is primarily based at the Authority's head office in Harwich, however, there is potential for a hybrid working arrangement.
