Our client, a diversified asset manager with over $500bn AUM is seeking a Global Head of Active Ownership. The board are investing significantly to build out a high calibre team under the global head of sustainable investing. This will be one of three leadership roles alongside ESG data integration and forward-looking, sustainability-driven investment research.

This is a newly created role working in close cooperation with the investment teams to evolve their approach to engaging with investee companies, with a focus on how their business models align with ESG & Impact principles and regulatory requirements. This person will make additional hires to build greater investment stewardship capacity, as well as lead a pre-existing team that drives the voting, policy and reporting efforts across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with investment team leads to create strategic engagement plans, facilitating regular dialogue and meetings at Board and Executive Committee level at selected companies on all relevant corporate governance, long-term strategy and environmental and social risks.

  • Build and lead a team that can assess the risks and opportunities presented by ESG issues to drive the investment process through high-quality, engagement-driven research.

  • Presenting results of thematic content and engagements to clients, portfolio managers, sales and marketing functions, at least on a bi-annual basis and participating in industry events as a spokesperson for the group.

  • Work closely with Portfolio Managers to produce technical investment appraisals for investee companies.

  • Represent the firm externally to ensure representation in the most appropriate and highest impact potential multi-stakeholder initiatives.

  • Lead the team that drives the voting & engagement activities within the business.

Experience Sought

  • In-depth understanding of the risks and opportunities that the shift to a more sustainable global economy represents.

  • Strong understanding of material ESG factors and how they can be utilized to influence strategy in companies and portfolio management teams to drive integration and, ultimately, a transition to more sustainable business models.

  • Background executing on voting & engagement and managing a team of active ownership professionals.

  • Strong experience in the asset management industry, working with investment teams and managing a team of investment and/or sustainability professionals.

  • Experience in international engagement and voting processes.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to build and retain relationships internally and externally, and communicate with stakeholders professionally.
