Carbon Tracker - Stewardship

Carbon Tracker Initiative is an independent financial think tank that carries out in-depth analysis on the impact of the energy transition on capital markets and the potential investment in high-cost, carbon-intensive fossil fuels. We believe that financial markets, regulators, investors, and policymakers all have an urgent role to play in guiding the world to a climate-secure energy system. Carbon Tracker's analysis of unburnable carbon, stranded assets, and wasted capital has reframed the debate around climate change risk.

We are seeking a talented and experienced individual to join and develop Carbon Tracker's institutional investor engagement work with listed fossil fuel/power and utility companies. This role will focus on the stewardship and governance function, leading Carbon Tracker's growing relationship with the governance teams at global asset owners, such as local authority pension funds, asset managers and sovereign wealth funds. It will also include developing and sharing analysis with proxy voting services and investors filing shareholder resolutions. This role will oversee Carbon Tracker's strategic support of investor engagement and, where needed, muster relevant research to support those efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advocates Carbon Tracker's investor outreach and distribution activities; building productive relationships with key audiences focused on corporate governance and investor engagement.

  • Actively utilise Carbon Tracker's research to identify target companies and investor targets for engagement activities and support our US and EU Outreach activities.

  • Establish Carbon Tracker as the trusted go-to provider for strategy, data and analytics on the corporate performance of fossil fuel related businesses, powering shareholder resolution filings, with a leading reputation in this space and recognised by target funders.

  • Engage with investment managers, pensions funds and other financial intermediaries to improve their understanding of climate risk and how it might affect the financial performance of companies in fossil fuel related sectors.

  • Market Carbon Tracker company insights and sector analysis to the corporate governance teams of major asset owners and investment managers, as well as independent proxy voting advisors and groups providing corporate governance advice.

  • Serve as a key contact point for investor led coalitions such as IIGCC, Net Zero Investor Alliance, UNEPFI and support Carbon Tracker's outreach work with CA100+ and its constituent members leading on corporate engagement.

  • Support and strategically guide investor groups filing shareholder resolutions by providing our data and company analysis.

  • Lead and instigate meetings of corporate governance teams and present Carbon Tracker's work at meetings, events, conferences focused on shareholder engagement & voting.

  • Pitch for new work, review and respond to prospects energy research needs and develop narratives for using Carbon Tracker research that support investor engagement and technical support for resolutions.

  • Work with both our US and UK-based research team to help produce and curate cutting-edge research around voting recommendations on Paris aligned business plans for the wider investment community.

  • Develop strategic stewardship engagements on key issues consistent with Carbon Tracker research themes

  • Business Strategy and Planning: You will work closely with our executive team on business planning and strategy.

Experience Sought

  • Passion for the cause and an advocate for our mission, vision, goals and theory of change.

  • Thorough understanding of governance and proxy guidelines in US and/or UK.

  • Experience in financial services focused on corporate governance, investor engagement, preferably from a proxy advisory service, corporate governance, sell-side or asset management.

  • Good understanding of energy markets including oil/gas, coal, P&U renewables both in US and globally.

  • Adept at building strong relationships; established and extensive network of governance teams at institutional investors/financial institutions.

  • Articulate with proven interpersonal and communication skills, confident explaining our research to senior management

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, welcoming the challenge of using experience and skills to promote and utilise Carbon Tracker's ground-breaking work to our target audiences

  • Bachelor's degree (MBA, CFA would be beneficial but not required)

In focusing minds and decisions on risks and opportunities associated with the transition from fossil fuels to the new energy industry, this role will help drive change towards a climate secure energy and financial system.
