Job Purpose

This role forms a key part of the Durkan Southmere Village project, which is part of Peabody's ambitious plan to transform Thamesmead with 20,000 new homes as part of a 30-year plan for the district. The area will also benefit from strong transport links including the new Elizabeth Line which is set to open a new station in Abbey Wood.

Durkan are on-site working on Phase 1A (£46 million), 1B (£126 million) and the Southmere Library (£7 million) and are in a Pre-Contract Services Agreement with Peabody for the Binsey Walk Phase (£95 million). Phase 1A of the project is well under way and includes the design and construction of 130 new homes, an energy centre, district heat network and commercial space. Phase 1B will see the design and build of 404 units, comprising of 397 flats and 7 houses.

The principal responsibility will be to collaborate with the Durkan H&S Director and the project team to help ensure a collective vision that extends beyond systems and compliance, and which focuses on people and behaviour, to help create a positively reinforced learning culture. This position will act as an ambassador and role model for the Health & Safety function with an engaging communication and influencing style and an appetite to drive long-term, sustainable change within the business.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Bring new, creative and inspired thinking to the Southmere project, whilst maintaining high standards of Health & Safety.

  • Coach and support the project team to generate new solutions to common, everyday issues.

  • Work closely with the H&S Director and the wider project team to bring about a "Safety Differently" approach on the project.

  • Engage with Directors, Managers, Supervisors and Workers to communicate the Durkan Health & Safety strategy, as well as the Durkan vision and values.

  • Communicate positive Health & Safety performance effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Stay abreast of developments in Health & Safety legislation and industry best practice through an ongoing process of formal continuing professional development.

  • Ensure that the Southmere project team is self-sufficient and properly enabled through successful Health & Safety coaching and influencing.

  • Act as an industry ambassador to positively change perception of the Health & Safety profession both internally and externally.
