Our client is a local authority close to London that has put Climate Action at the heart of its corporate agenda. This is a critical interim hire within their climate change team to accelerate and expand their work on climate mitigation and adaptation.

You will be working with the Head of Climate Change. Alongside other teams responsible for delivering a net-zero council and energy transition programmes, you will lead on the development and delivery of their countywide zero-carbon work to ensure they have the policy, partnerships and programmes in place to meet their goals. This work has the key end goal of halving emissions in the county by 2030 and is on route to being a carbon zero county well ahead of 2050.

This is a unique opportunity to add significant value to this council and to the communities and people inside it. This is an initial three-month contract with a very competitive day rate inside Ir35.

You will be:

  • Supporting their Climate Action Policy Officer to manage contractors to deliver a county-wide route map and action plan for zero carbon and offer a constructive challenge to contractors, ensure stakeholders in the county are engaged/have their outcomes met

  • Develop comprehensive new policy and strategy to support climate adaption and mitigation outcomes

  • Developing availability of data and evidence bases, including Oxfordshire's carbon footprinting data, in an accessible format to demonstrate progress, inform projects (ours and others) and in line with UK 100 requirements

  • Developing approaches to quantify emissions to aid decision making

  • Overseeing and ensuring an appropriate response to climate issues through our response to planning applications

You will have:

  • Significant experience in leading and effecting change relating to sustainability and climate within organisations and in partnerships

  • A detailed and applied knowledge at an authoritative level of climate action, and carbon management

  • Applied knowledge of the funding context for net-zero, ideally when relevant to Local Government
