Are you passionate about climate change? Are you looking to challenge yourself by moving into a high-impact role at an industry-leading Asset Manager? Can you see yourself being a leading advocate for the economic opportunities provided by decarbonisation/energy transition?

Then this might be the opportunity for you. Baillie Gifford is an investment partnership based in Edinburgh. Its ownership structure provides stability that enables them to think in timeframes that are very different to many of their peers. It underpins an investment style that prioritises patience in the search for outsized gains, as well as a willingness to invest continually in its capabilities, from the development of its people to the search for differentiated sources of insight.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Join the Climate & Nature research team within Baillie Gifford to further their understanding and scope for positive impact.

  • Focus on the development and execution of Baillie Gifford's Climate Optimisation strategy, which has a dual objective of generating financial returns and contributing to the substantial reduction of greenhouse gases over the long term.

  • Help shape the strategy's assessment and estimation of forward-looking impact, contribute to team research and investment decision-making, harnessing internal and external relationships and resources to drive our ambition to be leaders in this space.

  • Work more broadly with investment teams across Baillie Gifford in calibrating climate risks and opportunities, supporting their engagements with companies in respect of effective climate strategies, and helping frame communications with clients.

  • Overall, be creative and thoughtful in research across the carbon transition, adaptation and associated nature and social impacts to support our client's goals for long-term, enduring investment returns.

Competencies Sought:

  • Minimum 8 years experience in Climate/Carbon.

  • Deep subject matter expertise and enthusiasm around the solutions required to reduce and mitigate the effects of climate change.

  • The ability to proactively challenge ideas and thinking, to develop Baillie Gifford's work to date in climate impact and carbon accounting.

  • You will have an ambitious outlook regarding impact, but be comfortable that this takes place in an organisation with a spectrum of approaches; some, like Climate Optimism, are clear on their dual mandate, others seeking to incorporate climate among other investment drivers.

  • These skills may have been developed in the investment industry or elsewhere. We value ambition, desire to drive change and willingness to experiment.

Ideally, you will be a creative thinker, comfortable with the uncertainty inherent in long-term investment and someone who looks at the bigger picture and is naturally curious. You do not have to come from a direct financial background; however, you will need to be able to convey a deep understanding of carbon accounting, the energy transitions and its wider impacts. The team is based in Edinburgh, but there is some flexibility around working patterns and location.

If you have the skills and experience highlighted above and would like to be a key part of Baillie Gifford's ambition to be a leader in this space and build on their existing track record in growth and impact investing, then please apply directly or get in touch with Alex Westacott at alex.westacott@acre.com.
