Job Purpose


Control Risks business intelligence and due diligence teams help clients to make informed business and investment decisions and to identify and remedy risks that might arise through acquisitions, partnerships, or investments. This role sits within this team, though is exclusively focused on delivering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) consulting services, with a focus on their private markets investor client base.


The primary purpose of this role is to develop and take to market a set of integrated solutions to offer post-deal ESG support to investors, their assets, and portfolio companies. These solutions will sit within their portfolio of 'end-to-end' investor support services.


The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in ESG/sustainability strategy and consulting policy and framework development, and reporting and monitoring. The candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of relevant ESG, sustainability, and responsible investment market trends, regulations, and reporting requirements, and an understanding of the implications of this for private equity clients. The candidate should also have technical expertise in at least one key area of ESG/sustainability. Prior experience with product development would be a plus.


This role will require close collaboration with our in-house data technology team, as well as our specialists, focused on transaction advisory and diligence, social compliance, political and security risk analysis, and climate and risk consulting. The candidate should have experience with project management and operate in cross-functional project teams. While focused on the EMEA region, this role and its outputs will have relevance across our global business, and collaboration with senior stakeholders in other regions will be required.

Tasks and responsibilities


Product development and project delivery

  • Project manage the development of our post-deal ESG investment support services, with a focus on defining and creating a solution for post-deal monitoring, reporting, capacity building, and value creation.

  • Establishing a methodology and approach to cover: roadmap drafting (short/long-term/inputs for 100 day plans), external risk and regulatory monitoring, policy development and implementation, training and capacity building for portfolio companies, impact and value creation strategies, and KPI setting and monitoring.

  • Evaluate current capabilities and identify opportunities to bring in relevant new tools to support the development of these services.

  • Actively contribute to the development of adjacent products and services.

  • As part of the continuous growth of investment support services, contribute to our pre-deal and transactional work. This will include project delivery and broader advisory services for clients on ESG strategy and integration, due diligence, and risk management/remediation planning.

  • Ensure SG consulting methodologies are updated to reflect the market and regulatory changes and developments.

  • Business development.

  • Once established, the candidate will be responsible for taking the post-deal product to market. The candidate will be expected to consistently refine the product in line with regulatory changes, client demands, and emerging trends.

  • Be the subject matter expert leading discussions for their post-deal ESG investor support product and participate in broader business development efforts for our ESG consulting services.

  • Identify and build relationships with potential buyers of post-deal services; translate this into generating opportunities and income for the practice.

  • Co-ordinate and write concise and persuasive proposals, and ensure projects are priced, structured, and managed effectively.

  • Thought leadership and people management.

  • Track and communicate developments on ESG topics and trends, frameworks and standards, and relevant regulations to clients and colleagues.

  • Participate in thought leadership and marketing opportunities and represent Control Risks at external events.

  • Mentor and train colleagues on ESG and related topics.

  • Engage and manage diverse project teams.

Knowledge and experience

  • Experience in a relevant ESG or sustainability-focused role focused on investors, either at a consultancy or in-house at an investment firm.

  • Experience working on post-deal matters and directly with portfolio companies preferred.

  • Experience in investment, M&A or transaction advisory, and decision-making.

  • Well-developed understanding of ESG/sustainability/responsible investment trends and the emerging regulatory environment.

  • Experience with ESG performance, assessment, and reporting frameworks and targets, such as TCFD and GRI.

  • Professional experience using data or technology-driven solutions in the ESG/sustainability consulting space preferred.

  • Project management experience and demonstrated experience of building and working successfully within cross-discipline and geographically dispersed teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to convey complex information and recommendations in a confident, persuasive and accessible manner.

  • Strong client management skills with a demonstrated track record of developing client relationships.

  • Prior experience navigating and advising different groups of stakeholders within investment firms and at investees, including but not limited to - deal/investment, ESG/impact, risk and compliance, and legal counsel. The candidate will need to support these stakeholders in communicating findings, processes, and progress to a further range of internal and external stakeholders.
