Role overview

In 2019 Dentsu reached its 2020 carbon reduction target one year early and set a new science-based target to further reduce emissions by 2030. Dentsu is now seeking a Head of Climate & Nature, who will support the development and delivery of the future environmental strategy, including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies to decarbonise the business and continuing the commitment to procuring renewable energy. This role will also collaborate with the global communications team to engage and inspire the global network of 47,000 employees to achieve their environmental ambitions through the business and through work done every day for businesses and brands all over the world.

The successful candidate will work across the dentsu network to inform senior executives on brand and market progress and coordinate performance tracking against the environmental goals. This role is key in driving and delivering our Social Impact strategy, demonstrating dentsu's commitment to building a digital economy that works for all.

The candidate will be expected to set the markets/regions up for success and enable them to adopt and deliver on dentsu's global Social Impact Strategy and associated KPIs. While the role covers scopes 1,2, and 3, there will be a focus on Scope 3. Furthermore, the candidate will need to lead their team and ensure the execution of the strategy at a market-regional level. As part of the role, it is expected that the candidate handles daily matters (constantly striving to optimise and improve existing systems) and contributes to the future strategy and vision of Social Impact on a longer-term, network-wide initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to drive consensus across multiple stakeholders and be a great team player. A balanced mix between technical and creative is ideal. The ability to work independently and deal with an ambiguous environment is a must.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work across the Dentsu global network to inspire and ensure the adoption and delivery of relevant strategic activities in support of the environmental goals and KPIs (globally)

  • Lead working groups, stakeholder engagements and forums as the dentsu subject matter expert on issues relating to Environmental Strategy.

  • Create and drive the adoption and delivery of initiatives and campaigns to engage and inspire both internal and external stakeholders to take action to address climate change

  • Act as an external spokesperson representing dentsu at relevant platforms and events and engage with media and policymakers as appropriate

  • Refresh, refine and create internal policies, protocols and guidance documents related to best-in-class environmental performance

  • Provide expert input and guidance in to rating agencies such as Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Ecovadis and become the business's go-to expert on the environment.

  • Contribute to documents as part of the governance process - e.g. Board Presentations, TCFD

  • Contribute to the annual reporting process ensuring high-quality data submissions and analyses

  • Collaborate with communications and marketing to ensure dentsu's progress is effectively communicated to build employee engagement, brand and reputation.

  • Provide the dentsu leadership team with a future view on global issues which may impact the successful delivery of the Social Impact strategy. (Social, political etc.)

  • Management responsibility, three direct reports

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Bachelors and/or Masters Degree in an Environmental or Sustainability related discipline

  • Deep understanding of carbon and environment methodologies and environmental regulation and its implications for business

  • A proven and demonstrable track record in the delivery of projects in sustainability consultancy or in-house and the application of current/emergent business standards and expectations (e.g. ESG and SDGs)

  • Business acumen. This includes analytical and problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, business strategy development, financial planning and reporting

  • Experience in developing campaigns to engage and inspire individuals to take action to address climate change

  • Strong experience in planning, project and risk management with proven analytical abilities and attention to detail

  • An understanding of mega-trends, in particular, those relating to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and Net Zero

  • Strong professional network in sustainability and credible connections with key professional stakeholders

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience of working with global, matrix-managed and multi-disciplinary teams

  • Experience reporting against envrionmental standards (TCFD, TNFD, CDP)

Logistics

Dentsu is operating a hybrid approach to flexible working, with a general expectation of working from the office 2-3 days a week at times when restrictions are lifted. The role is based on the London office and reports to both the Chief Sustainability Officer - Anna Lungley & the Global Program Director - Craig Smith.
