Acre is partnering with M.P. Evans Group PLC as the company looks to appoint a new Sustainability Lead. M.P. Evans is an AIM-listed, leading producer of crude palm oil with plantations across Indonesia. The Group was founded approximately 150 years ago and has a long history in agricultural production. The Group's plantations currently amount to over 50,000 hectares, with the ambition to grow towards 80,000 over the coming five years.

M.P. Evans puts sustainability at the heart of its operations and has embedded sustainable practices across the Group. The business is looking to appoint a Sustainability Lead to ensure that the business continues to prioritize responsible practices across its operations and strive for improvement and an industry-leading approach to sustainable palm oil production.

The Sustainability Lead is responsible for managing the sustainability agenda of a UK-owned palm oil plantation in Indonesia that is tasked to research, develop and implement policies that improve the organization's impact on the environment without detracting from its business goals, and that adhere to all laws and regulations covering the palm oil industry.

The position is responsible for leading the sustainability practices throughout the organization and working closely with all the operating units within the organization to implement sustainability policies in accordance with RSPO, ISPO, ISCC and ESG standards.

Key responsibilities:

  • Sustainability Lead and staff leader to the sustainability department, reporting to the Director of Operations.

  • Spearhead the company's sustainability strategy, commitments and advise the leadership of the Group on issues pertaining to sustainability.

  • Lead the team to prepare subsidiaries for various environmental and sustainability certifications, assessments and reporting requirements.

  • Plan and implement all sustainability initiatives relating to social and environmental impact-related topics, engaging with the necessary internal and external stakeholders.

  • Represent the Group in external communications regarding sustainability, especially to international organizations like the RSPO and ISCC, as well as in communications with buyers.

  • Represent the Group in deliberations with RSPO and consultants regarding sustainability-related issues that are raised as complaints or are highlighted during assessments.

  • Collaborate with the UK office on efforts involving sustainability governance with an emphasis of policy and ESG reporting.

  • Communicate applicable new sustainability standards or regulations to senior management and all relevant internal Group stakeholders.

The position liaises closely with the organization's UK head office and with government regulators about the achievement of sustainability goals and adherence to sustainability standards, respectively, by the organization.

Key attributes include:

  • A relevant degree/qualification in environmental science, sustainable development or social policy is highly desirable.

  • Proven experience working in a sustainability or environmental science role is required so that the candidate is familiar with developing sustainability practices and the challenges in implementing these in an organization.

  • Familiarity with relevant sustainability initiatives such as the SDG17, GRI, and the RSPO is an advantage.

  • Accustomed to environmental management plans and carbon accounting and understand global human rights issues such as gender equity, discrimination, and modern slavery.

  • Willing to be based in Jakarta, and travel to plantation sites a few times a year.

  • Fluency in verbal and written English. Able to converse in Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia is preferrable.
