Our client is a deepwater oil and gas company with growing production, a pipeline of development opportunities, and a balanced exploration portfolio along the Atlantic Margins.

As an ethical and transparent company, our client recognizes the world is facing a serious challenge from climate change influenced by human activity. As a result, they are now seeking to integrate the challenges and opportunities that climate change and the global energy transition may present, into their core business strategy.

This leadership position will be responsible for shaping and delivering an industry-leading position for the business on climate and environment. The VP will act as the in-house subject matter expert and will engage at the Board and C-suite level as well as with department heads, investors, industry associations, the scientific community and NGOs.

Essential Responsibilities and Job Duties

  • Oversee the Climate Change Task Force (chaired by the CEO and reporting into the Board of Directors) to drive strategy on this topic.

  • Lead engagement with external stakeholders on climate and environment - including investors, suppliers, business partners, host governments, local communities, industry organizations, and international scientific and environmental organizations.

  • Partner with Commercial and Strategic Planning functions to conduct scenario planning and work with senior leadership to integrate conclusions into core business strategy.

  • Provide expert advice across functions to reduce operational emissions as well as with business partners and suppliers.

  • Work with Operations and HSES departments to measure direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions according to recognized international GHG accounting standards.

  • Lead emissions reporting efforts, in line with the recommendations of the Task Force for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

  • Develop and oversee leading-edge carbon offset projects

  • Monitor climate and environmental policy trends and help to manage any associated operational or reputational risks-updating or introducing policies, standards or practices as necessary.

  • Manage a small team and oversee consultants working on the items above.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Minimum of 10-15 years of professional experience in the climate and environmental policy field, preferably with at least 5 years managing these issues for an oil and gas company

  • Bachelor's Degree in economics, engineering, energy, or environmental discipline required

  • Master's Degree preferred

  • Recognized as a climate change or environmental policy expert, with an extensive network in both the private and public sector

  • Experience in managing small teams in a matrix organization required

  • Original, creative thinker with the ability to formulate and express a contrarian viewpoint

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
