Acre has been exclusively retained by the Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) to identify their new Director of Sustainable Development. This is a highly impactful role and will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to be instrumental in transforming the sustainability agenda across Great Britain's Rail network.

RSSB were established in 2003, as a direct response to the Ladbroke Grove rail accident and the subsequent recommendations by the Cullen inquiry. RSSB are governed by its members, including Network Rail, Train Operating Companies, Rolling Stock Companies, and Infrastructure Managers. The overall aim of the organisation is to reduce unnecessary cost, improve both business and safety performance, and to develop a long-lasting GB Rail strategy.

The sustainability and environmental vision of the organisation is simple, to be at the forefront of driving the Sustainable Development agenda across Great Britain's Rail sector. Being independent of any single railway company, RSSB are perfectly positioned to take a future focused approach with an overarching view across GB Rail.

Key duties will include:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of RSSB's strategic Sustainable Development approach, positioning RSSB as GB Rail's centre of excellence

  • Set the Vision for GB Rail, and lead its delivery, playing a key role in contributing to wider industry strategies (Rail Technical Strategy and the Whole Industry Strategic Plan), ensuring change is driven across the industry

  • Lead policy development that delivers sustainable outcomes in areas of strategic focus, such as Decarbonisation and Air Quality

  • Steer the technical and strategic development of a multi-million-pound programme of research

  • Lead the technical support, analysis, and advice to the DfT Rail policy team, ensuring effective and robust implementation of policy objectives, whilst maintaining RSSB's position as a key technical advisor to DfT Rail on Sustainable Development

Alongside a strong technical sustainability background, significant experience engaging with political and senior leaders is essential. To do this, a credible, articulate, and collaborative approach is required. Showcasing strong emotional intelligence and the ability to influence a wide variety of stakeholders will be critical to success.

To be successful, you will also have:

  • Proven expertise in the areas of Decarbonisation, Air Quality & Social Value within a high-risk industry (Rail, or wider Transportation is desirable)

  • Substantial people management and development experience, combined with strong coaching and motivational capabilities

  • The confidence and credibility to influence at the highest level (e.g. Industry Bodies, Government, Transport Groups etc.)

  • An ability to communicate clearly, articulately, and constructively with a wide range of personalities

This is a unique opportunity to drive Sustainability across an industry. With RSSB's independent position, you will be spearheading Sustainability at a critical time for GB Rail and will play a pivotal part in creating a lasting legacy.
