General Manager, Communities & Social Performance

The Simandou mine represents one of the largest iron ore reserves in Guinea and in the world; on-the-ground mining work is about to begin - an operation that will change the fabric of Guinea forever, bringing jobs, stability, and investment to the area.

Delivering the Simandou project will require a collaborative and integrated approach to health, safety, security, environment, and social impact (including human rights) management. Environmental management and local livelihoods, in-flux, in-migration, land, resettlement, and security, all have important implications for the protection of human rights and biodiversity.

​

As General Manager, you will take the lead on community development and social performance within one of Rio Tinto's most complex projects. This is a career-making role for the right enthusiastic person.

​

You will be a seasoned leader with considerable experience within major infrastructure projects, managing extensive and complex community and social performance risks, impacts, mitigations, and investment opportunities.

​

You will also bring:

​

• Experience in integrated infrastructure projects and regional economic development

• Expertise in Communities and Social Performance (CSP) technical planning, design, and execution

• Robust understanding of emerging environmental, social and governance practices in extractive industries

• Deep understanding of influence, power dynamics and tensions - how impacted communities make decisions, and how political and social dynamics interact

• Experience working at a grassroots level with deep understanding of community and social development

• Able to move innovative ideas and initiatives from conception to realisation

The right candidate will ideally speak both English and French and will be based in Guinea, with relocation support from Rio Tinto.

​

In this role you will have a huge opportunity to shape the strategic direction and implementation of Rio's biggest project by:

​

• Actively participating as a leader of the Simandou project, working cross functionally to support project delivery

• Working with HSE and social and environmental impact assessment (SEIA) functions, managing and leading on CSP challenges and driving organisational change

• Working closely with the Rio's other CSP Corporate teams to implement best-practice and reduce risks

• Ensuring project compliance with relevant standards including the Rio Tinto Human Rights Policy, the Communities and Social Performance Standard and other relevant requirements

• Interfacing with lender organisations and Rio Tinto Group to ensure that CSP standards are understood and met throughout mine planning, construction, and operations

• Developing and executing a thoughtful, integrated, and strategic approach to CSP focusing on constructive relationships, managing impacts and risks, and delivering value to impacted communities
