The Manager of Sustainability – Mining will translate complex strategy into action, inspiring new ways of thinking and working in the ESG area. You will play a critical role in supporting ArcelorMittal’s goal - to increase the maturity level of their various mining sites on IRMA to respond to customer demands but also to assist in establishing best-practice approaches in the jurisdictions they operate in. 

About You: 

  • Currently, a highly experienced sustainable development practitioner, having worked in and across various businesses or sectors on solution-focused approaches to a wide range of Environmental, Social and Governance challenges.

  • Have first-hand experience engaging externally to align the business to progressive standards and developing solutions and recommendations to mitigate challenges across a value chain. 

  • Having learned from mistakes as well as successes, you have developed excellent emotional awareness around how it takes more than individual expertise to achieve real systemic change.  

  • Know how to lead scenario analysis work in accordance with the IRMA recommendations 

  

You will be responsible for advising and supporting the mining sites on the implementation of the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). IRMA is comprised of approximately 400 indicators in the areas of stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanism, cultural heritage, environmental management (waste, water, air, biodiversity) and occupational health & safety standards.  

 

As the Manager of Sustainability – Mining, you will be: 

  • Monitoring trends in community relations, environmental issues, renewable resources, sustainable work process, H&S and other diverse fields to provide functional leadership and expert advisory in the field of environmental and social sustainability 

  • liaising with international NGOs around best practice and broader industry themes 

  • Representing the corporate mining entity in select trade associations, and other bodies 

  • Ensuring that corporate sustainability strategy is aligned with IRMA. You will identify and capitalize on opportunities and manage risk, monitor and track sites compliance to IRMA adherence and provide guidance to site staff on E, H&S and S matters 

  

You would need to appreciate and respect how to work with a centrally devolved, highly entrepreneurial business which empowers its people from the ground up, combining this with a level of humility required to leverage and guide a high-profile, well-respected executive leadership team. 

  

You’ll be a Sustainable Development practitioner with strong communication skills, a strategic approach with a track record of impactful work, and a broad mining, manufacturing or metals background. In return, you will work for a business with as big a commitment to its people as to the sustainability agenda.  

 

Please note: 

  • This role will ideally be based in the UK, although consideration will be given to candidates based elsewhere. 

  • This role will require travel multiple times per year to ArcelorMittal’s various sites in Kazakhstan, Liberia, Mexico etc.
