Huhtamaki is a global food packaging specialist, headquartered near Helsinki, Finland. The company is a pioneer in exploring and using new sustainable materials such as bio-plastics and recyclable materials. Its products include paper and plastic disposable tableware, such as cups, plates and containers for quick service restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, caterers and vending operators. The company provides coated paper cups for fast food chains, as well as flexible packaging and labels for food and drink, pet food, pharmaceuticals, household and hygiene brands.

Acre has been selected as Huhtamaki's search partner to fill a pivotal role in the business, the Global Sustainability Manager.

The Global Sustainability Manager will be the environmental expert within the organization and will report to the Head of Corporate Responsibility. The role will be responsible for the effective implementation of large parts of Huhtamaki's Sustainability Strategy across 78 manufacturing sites in 34 countries, with an overall goal of making Huhtamaki a true leader in sustainable food packaging.

Key duties will include:

  • Serve as Huhtamaki Group's internal leader and 'go to' expert for environmental topics, communicating and educating others in line with company strategy.

  • Work closely with our business segments to implement key parts of Huhtamaki's Sustainability Strategy, focusing on the topics of circular economy, renewable energy, carbon, climate, water and waste.

  • Form and lead internal project teams on topics ranging from product innovation for circularity, to water risk evaluation, to development of internal policies and processes.

  • Stay abreast of the relevant regulations, news and trends, and inform senior management accordingly.

  • Represent Huhtamaki Group in relevant industry associations, events or external stakeholder meetings.

This role will be part of the Huhtamaki global corporate team and will play a key role in representing Sustainability and Environmental issues at the highest levels within the organisation, but equally, will spend time with production employees and work with them to integrate sustainability and environment considerations and actions into their day to day role.

As this role will be responsible for implementing parts of Huhtamaki's Sustainability Strategy into the various parts of the business, you will need to be able to inspire and influence people to take ownership of environmental and sustainability issues.

You will continuously look for opportunities to drive business improvements; create change and add value with more innovative ways of working. You will be expected to be self-assured in your abilities and use this to market and promote the business's sustainability strategy in creative ways.

The Global Sustainability Manager will have:

  • A Masters level degree in Chemistry, Environmental Management or similar technical field

  • Proven expertise in the topics of; circular economy, renewable energy, carbon, water & waste

  • Extensive experience of sustainability within an industrial organisation

  • Strong project management and presentation skills

  • Experience of working with a diverse range of cultures across multiple regions

  • The desire to be an environmental and sustainability ambassador
