ResponsibleSteel, a fast-growing, global multi-stakeholder standards body for sustainability in the steel industry, is looking to recruit a CEO to take the organisation into its next exciting phase of growth.

Steel drives the world's largest materials industry, generating a turnover of 1 trillion US dollars. ResponsibleSteel's standard and certification programme ensures businesses and consumers can be confident that the steel they use has been sourced and produced responsibly at every stage of the production chain.

The new CEO will play a critical commercial role building ResponsibleSteel into a global entity recognised and respected as a leader in the sustainability performance of global steel producers. In this role, you will be working closely with an experienced and collegiate Board, to develop and execute the strategy, identify and secure funding and membership in relevant sectors and geographies, and represent the initiative to public, private and civil society stakeholders in an international setting.

Further Responsibilities Include:

  • Deepening and broadening the impact of ResponsibleSteel by driving its mission and purpose

  • Promoting the uptake of ResponsibleSteel Standards by steel producers worldwide via organic growth, strategic partnerships and provision of world-class thought-leadership

  • Providing direction and support to the existing team; maintaining quality while pursuing growth

  • Ensuring that ResponsibleSteel processes and standards are robust, meaningful and provide value to relevant stakeholders

This post will suit a proven business leader who has operated on an international scale and who thrives on bringing people together. You will naturally demonstrate an ability to prioritise, focus on the strategic goals and align multiple stakeholders to the overall mission of the initiative.


In addition, you will have:

  • Demonstrable experience ideally in both the private and non-private sectors, with clear evidence of understanding and aligning multiple agendas across governments, NGOs, private finance, employees and civil society

  • Previous experience running an organisation or large business unit; managing budgets, headcount and growth plans, ideally within a multi-stakeholder initiative or industry association

  • Proven business development experience; identifying sources of funding & maximising revenue streams within an entrepreneurial setting

  • A comprehensive understanding of social and environmental sustainability, including a solid knowledge of supply chain standards and impacts

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, and ability to influence businesses and stakeholders
