BT Pension Scheme (BTPS) are recruiting a Stewardship Lead for a newly created role within their Sustainable Investment team.

The Scheme is the largest private-sector pension scheme in the UK and one of the largest pension funds in Europe. It is a mature scheme with c.300,000 members and over £57.5bn of assets, paying out over £2bn in pension payments every year. The scheme has a long history of being a responsible and engaged investor.

The firm's Sustainable Investment team are responsible for the full integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the Scheme's investment process; promoting active stewardship of its portfolio companies and implementing BTPS' ambitious plans to be Net Zero across its entire portfolio by 2035.

The Role

The Stewardship Lead will play a key role in helping BTPS to establish a world class, sustainable investment asset owner approach and reputation. Reporting into the Head of Sustainable Investment, the role will be responsible for leading and coordinating the SI team's stewardship activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Head of Sustainable Investment to deliver the Scheme's Sustainable Investment strategy.

  • Establish stewardship plans linked to sustainable investment strategy and coordinate engagement activities.

  • Highlight ESG areas of risk and opportunity to complement the work of external managers and stewardship providers.

  • Strengthen oversight of voting of proxies and establish voting policies on key sustainable investment themes.

  • Deepen external manager due diligence, assessment and monitoring programmes to deliver best in class ESG integration, voting and engagement activities.

  • Enhance ESG data gathering and tracking from external managers and stewardship providers.

  • Enhance engagement tracking and success across all asset classes.

  • Align and ensure stewardship activities are consistent with measuring investment impact.

  • Support timely communication of BTPS' stewardship related activities to stakeholders, including voluntary and regulatory bodies.

  • Be a subject matter expert on ESG issues and responsible investment practices.

  • Support BTPS' 2035 Net Zero climate change goal.

Requirements:

  • University degree, and additional qualifications in finance/economics.

  • Experience of working in and/or for a fund management house or financial institution, ideally in credit investment.

  • Track record in stewardship, with a focus on social and governance issues.

  • A strong understanding of key good practice standards of RI, UK Stewardship Code, PRI Annual Survey and ESG matters.

  • Experience of managing and prioritising a diverse and demanding workload and meeting deadlines.
