Are you a sustainability professional excited by working on a broad remit, from tracking carbon emissions to developing creative waste management strategies? Do you wish to take a lead role in which you can make the mark and put your influencing skills to use?

Acre is partnering with Howarth Timber Group, the largest privately-owned timber company in the UK, to appoint their first sustainability hire. With production and sales branches across the UK, the business employs over 1000 people and is one of the leading timber product suppliers for construction companies and home goods manufacturers.

As Howarth Timber's business grows, building a sustainable foundation is essential. They are now looking for a confident Sustainability Manager to facilitate their ESG agenda. In this lead role, you will take charge of implementing its climate, waste, and broader environmental strategy into Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions, the company's flagship timber engineering service, and subsequently implementing the strategy into the rest of the Group companies.

Your opportunities/ challenges in this role include:

  • Developing and promoting sustainability objectives and performance targets internally. Working with each function and area of the businesses to determine the sustainability opportunity and develop strategic and tactical plans to address them.

  • Implementing plans to measure and reduce the Company's Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions, including collating emissions data for annual SECR and external audit reporting.

  • Designing and implementing the company's waste strategy and turning their waste into resources. Specifically engaging with the company's plastic packaging strategy.

  • Raising awareness amongst the Senior Leadership Team and Board on sustainability topics through regular engagement. Using your influencing skills to facilitate company leadership's support on the ESG agenda.

  • Raising the sustainability profile of the company towards target audiences, including key suppliers, customers, Government, sustainability bodies, and trade organisations. You'll attend relevant events to represent the company and benchmark against the wider industry.

You will be able to leverage the following skills in this role:

  • Passion for all areas of sustainability. Demonstrable track record in developing and implementing sustainability programs.

  • Ability to influence at all levels, including directors and senior leadership team. Being able to inspire various stakeholders both internally and externally and motivating teams into action.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to see through the whole lifecycle of sustainability initiatives.

  • Experience and knowledge in carbon emissions tracking and reporting.

  • Ideally, you would have some experience in waste strategy, but this is not a requirement.

Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions operate from four locations within England, including Bury St Edmunds, York, Manchester, and Swindon. Other group companies operate from 35 other locations across England, including a dock in Northeast Lincolnshire.

Flexible working is on offer with the opportunity to work from home, but it is expected that the job holder will spend 20% of time travelling to various group companies/ manufacturing sites. For ease of travel to these sites, it is likely that you'll be based in the Midlands.
