Acre is engaged by one of the world's largest and most successful private equity firms to appoint a Sustainability Lead for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, based from the London office. This is a new position within the global sustainability team. Globally our client has circa US$ 200 billion in assets under management, with direct investments in companies contributing to over one hundred funds, spanning a multitude of industry sectors.

This is an exciting opportunity to further enhance the strategic advantage of sustainability expertise within the business and to create value. Working closely with the investment teams, deal teams and portfolio companies; the successful individual will contribute to the development of sustainable and future-fit businesses within the region, with occasional contribution to companies in south-east Asia.

In addition to the assessment and management of environment, social and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities across the investment process, from due diligence to ownership and reporting, responsibilities include:

  • Identifying new ideas for opportunities and for managing emerging risks, in order for investment colleagues to enhance their roles in managing investments and in creating value at fund and company level
  • Supporting portfolio companies to advance their sustainability strategies
  • Managing relationships with a variety of external stakeholders from NGOs through to clients invested in the funds, such as development finance institutions (DFIs)
  • Contributing to investor engagement through fund-level and public reporting on performance, and for example, producing content for fundraising material
  • Internal advancement of ESG through training and delivering presentations on innovation relating to sustainability
  • Occasional travel

Skills, knowledge and experience required:

  • Extensive experience of sustainability gained in a multinational business, consulting, DFI, NGO or investment context, with ability to apply experience to drive commercial advantage and business performance across multiple industry sectors and geographies
  • Experience of sustainability in emerging markets
  • Solid influencing, communication and relationship building skills
  • A graduate degree or MBA in a relevant field, with any topic, i.e. sustainable development, social impact or climate change, as a dissertation or research focus
  • Experience of social issues such as supply chain management, labour standards and human rights an advantage
