Acre is proud to be working with the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI); the national trade association in the United States of the metal and composite can manufacturing industry and its suppliers.

Steel and aluminum cans are the nation's most recycled food and beverage containers; which means less pollution, reduced costs and a steady supply of resources for years to come.

Public opinion has never been more tuned into the need for sustainable packaging and the impact of single-use plastic on our environment and on our oceans. With this in mind; the new Vice President of Sustainability will focus on developing sustainability and public affairs strategies to create a market environment that favors the can as the most sustainable package.

Based in CMI's offices in Washington DC and reporting into the CEO Robert Budway; this role will suit a dynamic individual who thrives on communicating complex issues to a wide audience, from legislators and NGO's to the media, industry associations and ultimately food and beverage customers across the country.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Proactively developing industry strategies, programs and activities and engaging with NGO's and other thought leaders to position the can as the preferred solution to sustainability challenged substrates
  • Developing key message points and engagement strategies for policy makers and influencers on - e.g. package substrates and taxes; EPR schemes, deposit legislation, recycled content minimums, tethered caps
  • Developing CMI's position on use of government funds to supplement other recycling technology or collection schemes; or government incentives to promote metal packaging
  • Acting as a subject matter expert and thought leader injecting CMI perspectives into state-level policy-related discussions
  • Representing the sustainability credentials of metal packaging at conferences, in media interviews and in dialogue with policy makers

This is a high-profile role where the successful candidate will be communicating to a variety of audiences and stakeholders; and will know where to go to reach those audiences and to create speaking opportunities.

In addition you will:

  • Be able to work collaboratively across member companies to identify critical initiatives and activities, develop actionable plans and drive for results
  • Understand the interdependencies of the sustainable packaging topic and be able to build subject matter expertise on packaging topics
  • Have the ability to build and foster relationships with key influencers; drive outcomes through influence
  • Have experience with government relations and coalition building
  • Have a background in sustainability/scientific or technical topics. Packaging related experience is highly desirable
  • Have effective and persuasive written and oral communication skills

This is an opportunity to work in a small and dynamic team, influencing across business, government and civil society to see a real and lasting shift towards more sustainable and lower impact packaging for food and drink across the USA.
