The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) - a non-profit membership organisation that covers over 200 million hectares of certified forests - exists: To provide a sustainable forest management solution that is trusted by NGOs, consumers and businesses alike to protect healthy and resilient forests, for all, forever. They are looking for a Deputy Director Asia, which will be pivotal to sustaining FSC's growth in APAC and influencing the future direction of the organisation.

Reporting to the FSC Asia Pacific (APAC) Regional Director, the Deputy Director will support field operations across Vietnam, Indonesia, India, China, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand, and will have a special focus on business development and value chain development strategies that will grow FSC's reach in current and new markets.

Key Responsibilities:

Business and Market Development

  • Establish, together with individual country offices, a business and market development strategy for current markets.

  • Spearhead the implementation of a market analysis methodology that delivers a prioritised direction for future growth and expansion in the APAC region.

  • Identify opportunities in current or new value chains across the region by designing and implementing internal and external market research.

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to country offices as they develop value propositions that allow FSC to capitalise on sector-focused market opportunities and target key accounts.

  • Utilise their knowledge of competing schemes, the market and product potential to seek out and recommend business development opportunities.

  • Deliver dynamic and engaging pitches and presentations in meetings and conferences.

Project Development and Management:

  • Provide oversight and hands-on support during the development of strategic investment projects to ensure a common approach, strong links with regional priorities and a smooth workflow between FSC countries and units.

  • Ensure that planning is detailed, continuous and adjusted in a timely and effective manner in accordance with project requirements.

  • Closely monitor project performance in terms of financial, human resources, programmatic, and operational metrics, and make necessary decisions to support continuous improvement using the appropriate means and methods.

Operational

  • Assist in improving and monitoring the organisation's performance reporting systems to demonstrate impact and deliver on the FSC Global Strategy.

  • Support HR processes to achieve effective recruiting, hiring, compensation, and salary appraisals; and understand capacity and skill gaps to develop training and professional development initiatives.

  • Lead the procurement planning process to assure the timely contracts of goods and services required to support field operations.

  • Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.

This position is pivotal to sustaining FSC's growth in APAC and influencing the future direction of the organisation. The Deputy Director will have both internal and external responsibilities, ranging from strategic marketing and project management (specifically around projects that identify opportunities to expand the reach of FSC); administrative and operational tasks dealing with budgets and performance reporting; and human capital responsibilities - HR/recruitment, talent analysis, career progression, and others.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong track record and diverse experience in business development and commercial strategy roles, with experience in a senior management position including wide exposure in different industry sectors.

  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and pursuit management skills.

  • Strong financial acumen and have a history of solving financial concerns.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people and cultures - junior and senior, for-profit and non-profit, and from diverse backgrounds.

  • Track record of delivering superior results, commanding respect and assuming leadership roles.

  • Success in roles requiring the execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.

  • Passionate about sustainability topics and about driving change at a global level.

  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organisational settings.

  • Be a self-starter and be self-disciplined.

  • Possess spark, imagination, and creativity.

  • Remain focused in the face of pressure, able to deliver against timelines and not be intimidated by task or time limitations.

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written), other languages are a plus.
