Our client, a private equity firm, is seeking a Head of ESG focused on commodity investments such as metals for electric vehicles and gold. Based out of the London office, this newly created position is responsible for establishing and implementing an ambitious new ESG strategy for the fund.

As part of the leadership team, the Head of ESG will innovate on ESG topics to ensure the fund maximises sustainable development opportunities throughout the investment lifecycle.

Our client takes great pride in supporting their portfolio companies to achieve commercial success alongside responsible business practices to ensure long-term value creation. The mining assets are predominantly based in Canada, the United States and Latin America.

This Head of ESG role is both a strategic and hands-on position, working as part of the investment team; responsibilities include:

  • Participating in early-stage analysis and due diligence screening of multiple new potential investments, with the support of third-party consultants

  • Developing post-investment ESG support to portfolio companies, with a focus on defining and creating a solution for post-deal monitoring, reporting, and value creation

  • Developing and enhancing the existing ESG diligence, frameworks, monitoring and reporting practices

  • Participating in investor relations efforts at the fund level by attending roadshows and engaging with investors on ESG topics

  • Contributing to the continuous professional development of the firm on ESG themes through initiatives, training, and knowledge sharing

  • Travel 25% of the time to portfolio companies and other external stakeholder opportunities such as collaborative industry initiatives and conferences

In addition to the ability to create and implement ESG strategy, experience and competencies sort:

  • ESG/sustainable development experience within the mining industry, either in-house or through ESG consulting to the mining sector, which must include hands-on experience on location

  • The ability to influence and build relationships, along with strong communication skills

  • Experience with topics such as stakeholder analysis, resettlement and compensation, ethical conduct, supply chain and climate change

  • Experience in dealing with ESG policies in multiple jurisdictions/regions

  • Deep understanding and application of international best practice ESG standards and guidelines, such as the Responsible Gold Mining Principles, PRI and World Bank Guidelines
