Hydropower is the largest source of renewable electricity today, and global capacity continues to expand alongside increased focus on life extension, refurbishment, environmental performance, and grid flexibility. In parallel, pumped storage is re-emerging as a critical system asset, supporting balancing, inertia, black start capability, and long-duration flexibility as grids decarbonise.

Tidal stream and wave energy are progressing towards commercialisation, with a growing pipeline of pre-commercial farms and increasing device deployments. Europe’s ocean energy sector has delivered cumulative generation and a growing multi-year pipeline, signalling improving reliability and investor confidence.

Hydropower

• New build and expansion – run-of-river, storage hydro, hybrid renewables integration

• Refurbishment and uprates – turbine and generator upgrades, balance-of-plant, controls modernisation

• Dam safety and resilience – inspections, risk frameworks, hydrology, climate resilience and emergency planning

• Pumped storage – project development, grid integration, commercial strategy, delivery and commissioning

• Environmental and social performance – fish passage, habitat mitigation, catchment impacts, stakeholder engagement

Marine energy

• Tidal stream – array development, subsea cabling, offshore construction, O&M strategy
