Advisor R&D

Confidential Client

Acre has partnered with a leading North American utility that’s expanding its Grid R&D function and is seeking a seasoned R&D Advisor to serve as a senior technical contributor and internal thought partner on operational reliability and dynamic grid behavior.

This role sits at the intersection of advanced power system analysis, real-time operations, and executive-level decision support. The successful candidate will help frame complex reliability challenges, translate deep technical work into actionable insights, and support forward-looking R&D initiatives tied directly to system operations.

This is not a traditional planning role and not a pure academic research position. It is applied, operationally focused R&D with real-world grid impact.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior technical advisor on grid reliability and operational risk, with emphasis on dynamic system behavior
  • Frame complex, ambiguous grid challenges into clear analytical problem statements that can be evaluated by technical teams and understood by executive stakeholders
  • Lead and coordinate applied R&D efforts related to:
    • Dynamic power flow and contingency analysis
    • Real-time and day-ahead operational reliability
    • EMS-driven studies and operational decision support
  • Develop presentations, briefings, and technical narratives that translate detailed analysis into executive-level insights
  • Partner closely with engineers, data scientists, operations teams, and external vendors
  • Serve as a trusted internal collaborator, listening to stakeholders, integrating feedback, and driving alignment across functions
  • Support relationship-building across internal teams during the first year (periodic travel expected)

Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in Electrical, Power, or Computer Engineering with 8+ years’ experience
  • Strong background in power system operations, reliability, or EMS-focused analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with dynamic power flow or transient analysis (PSSE / TARA / TSAT / PSLF / PowerWorld / DIgSILENT), contingency assessment, or operational power flow (real-time or day-ahead focus)
  • Ability to move fluidly between deep technical detail and high-level strategic communication

Please note that this position can be located in either Minnesota or Indianapolis (relocation bonus available). If you're interested in a lead position on a team that is directly responsible for improving reliability across millions of homes, please apply with a copy of your resume.
