Acre is excited to be partnering with a leading distribution and supply organisation seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to play a key role in shaping its environmental and sustainability agenda. Operating across a large multi-site network, the organisation is committed to embedding sustainability into its operations, supporting commercial growth through environmental leadership, and driving meaningful long-term environmental performance improvements.
The Role
The Environmental Manager will be responsible for developing & implementing processes across the Group to ensure compliance with environmental reporting requirements, act as a subject matter expert, maintain an ISO14001 compliant management system, and deliver projects that improve environmental performance. The role holder will collaborate with a variety of stakeholders throughout the business, from site-based colleagues to Business Unit management teams, and seek to influence behaviours to drive environmental improvements and commercial benefit. Through supporting commercial teams, the role holder will seek to leverage environmental performance to support bids, tenders, and customer retention and position the environment as a USP that the Group can leverage. The role holder will be an integral part of the Group’s revised Sustainability Strategy and will act as an environmental brand champion.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head of Sustainability in developing the environmental pillar of the group’s sustainability / ESG strategy, including a decarbonisation / net-zero roadmap.
- Develop & execute environmental data capture, analysis, and reporting processes covering scope 1-3 carbon, waste, packaging, and other metrics covered within the Environmental pillar of the sustainability strategy.
- Ensure processes are in place for compliance with relevant environmental reporting regulations, including ESOS, extended producer responsibility for packaging, plastic tax, hazardous waste, F-Gas, Waste Electrical and Electronic Regulations, and carrier bag sales.
- Maintain a company-wide environmental management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO14001, including an up-to-date impacts & aspects register, colleague training, and sample auditing.
- Keep track of new legislation and provide updates to the business on potential impacts.
- Identify & deliver projects that improve the environmental performance of the Group.
- Support, influence, and engage Business Unit LTs, managers, and branch colleagues in implementing environmental improvement initiatives.
- Communicate internally & externally to raise the profile of environmental and the Group's Positive Impact value.
- Support / upskill sales and commercial teams on environmental requirements covered in tenders and customer questionnaires.
- In conjunction with the Property Team, manage the waste management contract, seeking waste reduction opportunities to leverage.
- Manage third-party relationships with Carbon & Packaging consultancies.
Key Requirements
- Relevant education in an environmental-related field (e.g. Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Change & Management).
- A Full Member (MIEMA) of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) (or equivalent professional body) with Chartered Environmentalist (CVENv) accreditation preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of developing, implementing, and maintaining an ISO14001 management system.
- Understanding of Producer Responsibility Regulations reporting requirements within CSRD, CfD & EU Taxonomy reporting frameworks.
- Experience in gathering, analysing, and reporting on environmental data in a robust and engaging manner, such as carbon, produce responsibility requirements for packaging, plastic, WEEE, etc.
- Experience of partnering with leadership teams and senior management in driving an environmental agenda and delivering improvements.
- Commercial understanding of the strategic benefit the environment provides for a business and how this can be leveraged for competitive advantage.
- Understanding of emerging trends, themes, and focuses within the environmental sphere and how they relate/impact the organisation.
