“We are the first generation to deeply understand Ocean issues and the last generation who can stop them”
Acre’s partner charity Plastic Oceans UK has been operating since 2009, dedicated to raising awareness on plastic pollution. Their award-winning documentary ‘A Plastic Ocean’ was named by Sir David Attenborough as “One of the most important films of our time’, igniting public awareness about the continuous impact plastic has on the ocean.
For over a decade they ran various education programmes with an aim to increase ocean literacy, stop plastic reaching the ocean and change attitudes on the appropriate use of plastic. But, now it’s time for change.
As if by fate, Plastic Oceans UK discovered Ocean Generation Foundation, a team of youths breaking stereotypes by using popular culture like gaming, music, and fashion to foster an inclusive approach to sustainability. With their goals aligned, Plastic Oceans UK has now become Ocean Generation and is set to embark on a new journey, combining the Ocean Generation Foundation Team’s energy and their years of experience storytelling through science and film.
Their mission is to change the narrative around plastic, climate change, and other man-made ocean issues. Moving away from big data, scientific terms or oversimplifying the issue through phrases such as ‘plastic free’ or ‘zero waste’, they want to develop understandable, affordable and practical tools and solutions. Their ‘Ocean Intelligence' toolset bridges the gap between people-led ocean action and institutional system change. By harnessing the power of science and storytelling they will share information that others can trust, is relevant to daily life and can help the public understand their role in safeguarding the ocean and motivate them to take action. They will be sharing the stories that bring a human face to face with the environmental issues the world is facing.

In order to evoke change, Ocean Generation is empowering and encouraging the next generation of leaders who recognise the steps that are needed to be taken in order to look after the ocean. ‘Wave Makers’ will be a global movement that connects people who are using their passion, knowledge and skillset to locally shift change in how the ocean is restored. Ocean Generation believe that young people are the catalyst for change and aim to give them a voice and encourage them to make conscious sustainable choices.
Having partnered with Plastic Oceans UK Since 2017, Acre has always supported and believed in their mission and will continue to as they embark on this incredible journey as Ocean Generation.
