In June 2016 Elinor joined Carnival UK, a company who operate with P&O Cruises and was tasked with helping to create a consistent safety culture. Elinor harnessed the initiatives used across the fleet and has adapted and introduced them at head office.
Elinor arranged a health and safety event for SLT at CUK, the messages were brought to life via an immersive theatre production, it was innovative and a first at CUK. The programme was supported and endorsed by the CEO and exec team who asked that all managers attend the event. A key success of the hard hitting drama has been to change perceptions of safety and increase awareness that safety is not just about slips and trips in the office, it is about the decisions and actions that are taken in the office and the affect they can have on all crew and passengers across the CUK fleet of 11 ships. The focal message has been to ‘Start Safe’ before every decision and action. Over 3 events, 250 managers have been trained, with additional events still taking place.
Elinor also introduced the Start Safe card and they were asked to make a commitment to safety. The Start Safe cards are also being included in the CUK and fleet induction to embed Start Safe into the company’s business as usual procedures.
Elinor believes it is important to listen and learn from other peoples mistakes and says the key to success is to align safety to the corporation’s values.
