The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is a government enterprise and responsible retailer and wholesaler of wine, beer and spirits in Ontario. They are embarking on a journey to elevate their social impact platform- Spirit of Sustainability to ESG principles, and you could be part of their exciting sustainability journey.

Under the general direction of the Director of Sustainability & Social Impact, the ESG Strategy Lead is accountable for managing the established scope of work with a world-class consulting firm and project team to create and implement a new 5-year environment, social, and governance (ESG) strategy and implementation plan for the LCBO. This position requires a self-motivated individual with strong skills in sustainability/ESG design and execution, interpersonal communication, and time management. You are comfortable working with an external consulting firm and taking accountability for the success of the scope of work.

The successful candidate will have:

  • 10+ years of direct experience with strategy development and design execution of ESG programs in a corporate and or consulting setting

  • 4-year bachelor's degree in Environment, Sustainability, Business, Finance or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge of ESG frameworks, standards and trends for corporate, retailer, and wholesaler

  • Training and certificates related to climate, GHG protocols, product life cycle, sustainable packaging and reporting

  • Proficiency in leading project teams, public speaking, including the ability to present at project team workshops and lead consulting agency conversations

  • Understanding of the following concepts and frameworks preferred

    • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

    • Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)

    • Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)

    • Sustainably Development Goals (SDGs)

    • United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

    • Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) like ISO 1400, 45001 ..etc

    • Social Return on Investment (SROI) or equivalent

    • Energy-related standards like ISO 50001

As the ESG Strategy Lead for LCBO, you will:

  • Manage the relationship with the leading consulting agency and the established scope of work while supporting broader business sustainability efforts.

  • Responsible for ensuring the successful execution of the established phases of work to create an innovative ESG strategy and execution plan

  • Ensure milestones are met with the consulting agency

  • Manage and ensure the success of the deliverables of the scope of work, such as double materiality assessment, peer benchmarking, strategic stakeholder engagement, current state assessment, GHG inventory development, gap analysis, metric/KPI identification, reporting and disclosure approach, financial projections and change management approach (in alignment with common sustainability/ESG reporting standards such as GRI)

  • Manage consulting agency project team, review of analysis, work papers and results and presentations

  • Provide strategic and regular updates to the Director, Sustainability & Social Impact

  • Lead any changes to presentations or analysis as necessary
