Acre is partnering with an established client in the transportation landscape to help organise their strategic success. This forward-thinking organisation has curated a robust sustainability strategy that addresses the material issues for the wider business and its surroundings.

For their next hire, they are looking to identify an Interim Carbon Engagement Manager to support them over a busy period. In this role, you will develop and maintain a carbon narrative for the business, working with key subject matter experts in the carbon team and with colleagues from internal comms, government affairs, media, comms strategy team, and marketing.

Assignment Duration: 6 Months

Start date: Mid/late October 2023

Hybrid Working: 2-3 days per week in the West London Office Location

Accountabilities:

  • Maintain an up-to-date set of key messages and FAQs on carbon, tailored as needed for key audiences, that are clear and compelling, supported by technical evidence as required

  • Build and maintain a map of key stakeholders, understanding their influence on the business and their importance to the delivery of objectives

  • Define an appropriate engagement strategy: reactive monitoring, regular comms & proactive engagement

  • Work with the L&D team to provide carbon content and insight to support a programme of capacity building for colleagues at every level

  • Work with the internal comms team to support an ongoing drumbeat of comms so that every colleague can talk confidently about company-wide plans and strategies

  • Work with the media team to respond to media inquiries and provide solid, evidence-based rebuttals as needed, and support a proactive strategy to communicate carbon ambitions to mainstream/specialist media

  • Develop a plan to identify and engage with key carbon/green/sustainability opinion formers (in campaign groups, politics, other businesses, academia, social media, etc), working closely with the sustainability team on stakeholders interested in carbon and other relevant areas

  • Represent key external groups related to carbon, including the UK Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, transport trade bodies, Green Alliance, etc

  • Maintain an up-to-date list of carbon-related external speaking opportunities and prioritise those with the most impact, identify the most appropriate internal speakers, and develop collateral for presentation (including writing speeches up to CEO/Board level)

  • Develop the written content on carbon for the annual report and sustainability report, providing a clear, accurate, engaging summary of our progress and plans

  • Be a member of the strategy working group and steering group, shaping the company's comms strategy and providing content as needed

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Graduate and/or postgraduate qualification or equivalent

  • Extensive experience in sustainability communications and stakeholder engagement in a business context and across a range of channels and audiences

  • Confident in engaging with a range of external stakeholders and ability to be a spokesperson for sustainability strategy in a variety of external forums

  • Up-to-date view of sustainability opinion formers (organisations and individuals) relevant to the business

  • Understanding of the UK policy landscape and the latest trends relevant to sustainable business

  • Strong interpersonal and communication, presentation, and influencing skills and able to deliver activities by working with colleagues across the business and its partners
