We are delighted to be supporting The Stone Family Foundation in hiring an Investment Manager.

The Stone Family Foundation

The Stone Family Foundation (SFF) is a private UK-based charitable foundation established in 2005. SFF provides funding through grants, loans, equity and blended finance instruments alongside hands-on support for market-based solutions in water and sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America. It seeks to deploy £8-10m annually across its Water portfolio to provide risk-tolerant, flexible funding, to innovative approaches and entrepreneurs that demonstrate how the private sector can accelerate access to Water at Home.

In 2022, SFF changed its strategy to focus solely on addressing the barriers to delivering piped water to the home. As a result, it not only seeks to pilot and scale new delivery models but also more sustainable forms of technical support and financing for the sector. In targeted cases, it also funds projects or initiatives to improve the regulatory and investment environment for water service providers.

SFF is now looking for a dynamic Investment Manager who is looking to apply their skills and experience to find creative market-based solutions to overcome the challenge of accessing Water at Home. The ideal candidate will have experience of structuring investments within a corporate finance role or as an investor with previous experience of working within the impact investing space or sustainable development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pipeline development: Conduct research and analysis to identify direct investment opportunities to maximise SFF's impact in line with its Water to the Home strategy.

  • Due diligence and Investment structuring/execution: Carry out due diligence, including site visits and designing/structuring social impact investments, as part of developing investment recommendations and present them to the investment committee for approval.

  • Portfolio support: Monitor investee performance and identify insights to inform SFF's strategy and due diligence, and help to deliver value creation across the portfolio through direct support and partner collaboration.

  • Strategy:Help the Managing Director to develop SFF's impact investment strategy and build out its investment toolkit to catalyse and scale investment in WASH.

  • Innovation: Identify financing mechanisms and investment structures to maximise the catalytic role that SFF can play to increase funding into WASH.

  • Thought Leadership: Help to build SFF's credibility and influence by developing key insights and sharing them with the sector.

Experience Sought

  • 4+ years of experience in an investment role, preferably with a focus on impact investing, infrastructure or sustainable development.

  • Experience in structuring investments including equity and debt, or with financial institutions. Experience in financing infrastructure, project finance and blended finance instruments is desirable.

  • Desire to learn about sector and to think creatively to identify or develop delivery models, investment structures and partnerships to accelerate progress and unlock funding into WASH

  • Willingness to travel extensively to build market and sector understanding, and to carry out due diligence.

If you are a self-motivated, intellectually curious individual who is passionate about using their skills in corporate finance or investment to lead on high impact mandates which accelerate access to water in developing countries, then please get in touch with Gemma Finegold via: gemma.finegold@acre.com.
