This position will require the candidate to work closely with senior leaders of the Global Sustainability Office (GSO) team in New York and London, collaborate with senior management across the Firm, and engage with external climate-focused industry initiatives that help guide Morgan Stanley's approach to measuring, managing, and reporting financed emissions. The candidate will be a member of GSO's Climate Team, which is responsible for developing and driving the Firm's climate strategy in collaboration with business partners.

This role is designed to provide both deep technical and project management support for net-zero-related projects led by the Climate Team within GSO. Morgan Stanley has developed a three-part Measure-Manage-Report strategy to address our net-zero commitment. This role would help implement across all three areas of work, with a primary focus on measuring and managing emissions.

Key tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Leverage existing credible methodologies, frameworks, emissions pathways, and other industry resources and best practices to further advance the Firm's approach to net zero

  • Actively participate in and contribute to external climate and carbon accounting initiatives such as the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ), the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) and Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP)

  • Provide climate expertise to internal stakeholders that will help expand GHG emissions measurement across asset classes

  • Partner with GSO's data team on climate data availability and quality issues and ensure appropriate climate data and metrics are incorporated into the Firm's business selection activities

  • Actively contribute to and support the development of a climate transition plan

  • Partner with and support key internal stakeholders in preparing our financed emissions and other climate-related material for disclosure

  • Contribute to other climate-related projects across GSO as priorities and timelines require

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree a plus

  • The successful candidate should have approximately 5-7 years of professional experience, including a strong foundation in climate finance, sustainability, and/or developing solutions to decarbonize emission-intensive sectors (i.e. oil and gas, power, real estate), evidenced by a relevant degree, appropriate industry qualification and/or relevant work experience in finance and/or a market-oriented NGO

  • The candidate will be able to demonstrate strong and capable project management skills, including the ability to drive projects to completion, adjust timeframes as needed to address unforeseen events and provide frequent updates to senior management to better inform decision-making

  • Must have broad technical knowledge related to science-based emissions pathways, carbon emissions data (including its challenges and limitations), various approaches to measure the carbon footprint of financing activities and transition finance

  • The candidate will benefit from experience in financial services, with broad knowledge of financial sector products and services (i.e. lending, capital markets activities, investment banking, etc.)

  • The candidate will need to deliver high-quality work within a fast-paced environment

  • The candidate should have experience and/or familiarity with carbon accounting, sustainability reporting, and climate science, as well as related methodologies and initiatives/orgs (TCFD, SASB, PCAF, GHGP, SBTI, TPI, NZBA/GFANZ, etc.). Familiarity with evolving global climate finance and disclosure regulatory requirements (ISSB, SEC, CRSD) is also helpful.
