Emergent is a mission focused non-profit, designed to catalyze the markets for forest protection by enabling the jurisdictional approach needed to foster a strong commercial ecosystem and scale one of the most powerful tools in combating climate change. Emergent have retained Acre to appoint a Managing Director - Carbon Markets to lead their carbon markets expertise and build the demand and supply ecosystem required to accelerate the speed and scale of forest protection and increase climate ambition within the private sector. While the location of this role is flexible, NYC, Barcelona, DC and London locations will be prioritized.

Emergent sits at the intersection between public and private, structured as an NGO but operating as a commercially savvy business, with the singular goal of driving maximum environmental impact through commercial solutions.

The group is supported by a leading coalition of government and NGO sponsors which includes the EDF, the Government of Norway and the Rockefeller Foundation, with the goal of "priming the pump" for a high-integrity, high-volume REDD+ market. Emergent will accomplish this by acting as an aggregator and intermediary to help overcome barriers for both buyers and sellers, with the ambition to catalyze substantial flows of private sector funds underwritten by sovereign guarantees.

In this newly created role, the MD will:

  • Build Emergent and your profile as a thought leader and brand ambassador in the REDD+ and climate sector

  • Design and execute Emergent's market strategy, business development plan and create scalable solutions as the organisations commercial architect

  • Foster and manage supply side transactions with the jurisdictional programs that generate carbon, REDD+, TREES credits and engage the public and private market on industry activities and these complex transactions

The MD will navigate the climate solutions ecosystem to build consultative relationships with sophisticated buyers, alongside the growth and delivery on a substantial sales pipeline for Emergent. You will influence growth and deliver value in Emergent's highly entrepreneurial and collaborative start up environment.

As a commercial, sustainability professional, your experience will include:

  • Climate and nature-based solution consultancy, in topics such as REDD+, TREES, carbon credits, degradation, afforestation and deforestation

  • Managing supply and demand side, multi-million transactions (including jurisdictional programs), building a pipeline of buyers and direct sales, as well as development of channel partnerships

  • Entrepreneurial in your approach, outlook and strategic thinking with a proven record of business growth and building the business and personnel infrastructure to support this growth

The recent IPCC Special Report on global warming of 1.5°C starkly emphasizes the urgency of addressing all sources of greenhouse gas emissions including by aggressive pursuit of natural climate solutions. The protection and restoration of tropical forests is one of the most significant opportunities to mitigate climate change over the coming decades. This role has an historic opportunity to turn this vision into a reality.
