Global Canopy is a data-driven think tank that targets the market forces destroying nature. They do this by improving transparency and accountability. They provide innovative open-access data, clear metrics, and actionable insights to leading companies, financial institutions, governments and campaigning organisations worldwide.

Over the last 5 years, with partners they have created a set of ground-breaking open data platforms, including:

  • Forest - 500 identifying, assessing and ranking the 500 'powerbrokers of deforestation'

  • Trase - for the first time linking consumer markets to deforestation on the ground at scale.

  • ENCORE - a unique approach for financial institutions to estimate and explore the dependence of their portfolios on nature, and related financial risks.

  • TNFD - a nascent Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures - a 'TCFD' for nature - backed by major financial institutions, companies and governments.

This role will be at the centre of a major new project, Aligned Accountability, that sits at the heart of Global Canopy's strategy and work. With 5-year support from the Norwegian Government, and working in partnership with ZSL SPOTT, the Accountability Framework Initiative, and other partners, the project will focus on bringing together existing data sets on deforestation, and working closely with the finance sector and ESG service providers to improve metrics on deforestation. These can ultimately guide more sustainable investment, improve risk management, support due diligence, and enable green product innovation.

The new Sustainable Finance Metrics Lead for Global Canopy will play a central role in joining the dots between these different initiatives and partnerships, and lead on engagement with a working group comprised of leading investors in this space, as well as with the ESG service providers that are the main intended audience for this work.

  • Delivery: ensuring a pragmatic, finance-sector perspective informs our work across programmes and partnerships, ensuring that we are delivering work that is relevant, timely and address key gaps for our target groups. This will entail playing a lead role on ESG-related work and programmes, principally for our major new 'Aligned Accountability' programme and Trase Finance, and supporting work such as the emerging Taskforce for Nature-Related Financial Disclosures.

  • Management: managing a growing team of finance sector engagement and analysis professionals in a matrix arrangement, supporting them to contribute effectively across our diverse programmes.

  • Partner and network management: maintaining and growing our network of investors, ESG service providers, government, research and civil society partners that we work with to achieve our goals.

  • Thought Leadership: representing Global Canopy and its initiatives in relevant high-level for a worldwide and acting as a spokesperson for the organisation at events and with the media and other stakeholders.

Experiences sought:

  • Deep and practical understanding of ESG metrics, and relevant data and disclosure initiatives.

  • Successful track record engaging (or playing key role within) ESG service providers towards practical outputs and outcomes. Relevant existing networks a major positive.

  • Leadership and strategy skills, and the ability to coordinate and motivate a wider range of cross-sector partners to dedicate time and take collective action.
